There are legal issues surrounding the practice of tablet crushing and capsule opening which could make the person administering the medicine in this format legally liable if the patient suffers harm as a result. Nurses should consult the pharmacist before changing the format of medications as alternative medication formats, which may be easier to administer, are available.
