Medicine administration in nursing homes - David Wright. Nursing Standard, July 2002.
A survey was carried out amongst nurses working in care homes to establish the likely extent of medication-related dysphagia and methods used to overcome this problem. It was found that 15% of residents had swallowing difficulties in relation to solid dose medication and that 61% of nurses crush tablets or open capsules to make them easier to swallow. This practice takes place on at least a weekly basis in over 80% of those care homes surveyed.
