Medication administration is governed both by statute and common law in order to protect public safety. Healthcare professionals could be held legally liable for any harm caused, if they crush tablets or open capsules to make administration easier for patients with swallowing difficulties. Both the legal aspects and the pharmacological aspects of tablet tampering are examined.
