About Rosemont

Rosemont Pharmaceuticals Ltd. is a leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of high quality oral liquid medicines which are used by patients who are unable or unwilling to swallow solid medications. We are based in Leeds, West Yorkshire in the UK, and employ approximately 170 people. Through our significant R&D expertise, we have developed over 90 oral liquid medicines, and our customers see us as 'The Source of Liquid Solutions'.

How Rosemont Came About

The year is 1967, in Cape Town the world's first human heart transplant was successfully carried out by South African surgeon, Christiaan Barnard. British yachtsmen Francis Chichester completed a solo round the world voyage in his yacht called the Gypsy Moth IV.  Donald Campbell died attempting to break the world speed record on Coniston Water and the Beatles released the classic Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album which represented a ground-breaking moment in musical history.

In the same year, in the world of medicine profound changes were taking place - outpatient care became more common with a smaller proportion of patients needing admission into hospitals. More people could lead a more normal life with the help of the correct medication allowing them to see the doctor on a less frequent basis. Outpatient care became more important and finding the best source of medication for each individual patient was seen as more of a priority than in the past. In addtion, two Leeds pharmacists decided to set up a company called RP Drugs focusing on the development of oral liquid  medicines.  This was the beginning of the company that was later to become known as Rosemont Pharmaceuticals Ltd.

How Rosemont Has Developed

Over the years our dedication to the development, manufacturing and marketing of oral liquid medicines has resulted in a product range of more than 90 different oral liquid drug formulations including corticosteroids, analgesics, diuretics, antibiotics and anti-psychotics.

We also manufacture "Specials", which are specially prepared, unlicensed medicines, prescribed when a licensed product is not available. A Special may be an unusual formulation or strength; it may be a preservative or additive-free product or an equivalent to a licensed product, which is temporarily unavailable.

We are constantly looking to improve the range of products and services offered through our ongoing product development programme. We are currently researching and developing a number of paediatric liquid formulations, an area that is likely to show considerable growth in future years, following the publication of the Children's British National Formulary.

Demand For Oral Liquid Solutions Is Rising

Many patients, particularly the elderly and the very young, have difficulties swallowing solid dose forms of their medicines and with increasing awareness about the potential dangers of crushing tablets or opening capsules, the demand for liquid alternatives has seen a significant increase.

Healthcare professionals and patients alike now expect solid medications to be available as a liquid when required. As a consequence of this increased demand, we are working to develop an ever increasing range of liquid medicines.

We also support healthcare professionals with a wide range of training materials and events covering the issues of medicines management and dysphagia. Included in the support package are: a medicines management video, a booklet written by a pharmacist, training days, a liquid formulary and a protocol written for administering medicines to people with swallowing difficulties. All of these educational materials have been written independently by healthcare professionals and can be accessed from the education section of this website.

In addition, we have a healthcare professional advice telephone line available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on 0113 244 1400.

The Future For Rosemont

A major upgrading and refurbishment programme has been undertaken at the Rosemont manufacturing facility in Leeds. A new state-of-the-art water system was recently installed, as water is a major component of liquid medicines. Production tanks, the electrical system and air handling systems have all been updated. We are ready for what ever the future holds.
